Nurturing your Nervous System throughout the festive season

The festive season is here, and however you resonate with this time, one thing is for certain - we are out of our normal rhythm and flow. Changes to your routine and environment can affect your physical or emotional wellbeing, and can sometimes be reflected on our skin. As our body’s largest organ, our skin isn’t solely influenced by our skincare rituals or external factors, but is deeply intertwined with our nervous system. When stress, anxiety, or other emotions kick in, they set off a surge of stress hormones such as cortisol, throwing off our skin's natural equilibrium. Keeping our nervous system in check becomes key to nurturing and preserving healthy skin. Please remember it’s okay to be in all of your ways these holidays (or any day) and embrace whatever journey you desire to bask in. It’s time to take a deep breath, find a quiet moment, and explore the connection between our nervous system and our skin health - the first step to healthy and glowing skin through the holidays.

Four Steps To Nurture Your Nervous System

Whether you’re visiting a new climate, living large and indulging in all the festivities, having to work extra long hours, feeling stressed and anxious, or deciding to lay low - we are all having to adapt to the experiences that come with the holiday season, and doing so with kindness to ourselves. So how can we nurture our nervous systems so we can glow through this busy time of year?
One: Nature
When we immerse ourselves in natural surroundings, our bodies respond in remarkable ways. The sights and sounds of nature activate our parasympathetic nervous system, the rest-and-digest mode, calming the racing thoughts and reducing stress hormone levels. Fresh air invigorates our lungs, flooding our bodies with oxygen that helps balance neurotransmitters, fostering a sense of calm. Natural light regulates our internal clock, guiding our sleep patterns and supporting a well-regulated nervous system. Even the simple act of grounding—walking barefoot on grass—has been linked to neutralising free radicals and reducing inflammation. Science, in its intricate way, validates what we feel when we're surrounded by nature's embrace, affirming its incredible power to restore and regulate our nervous system amidst life's whirlwind.
Two: Lymphatic Drainage
Gua Sha, Dry Body Brushing, and Lymphatic Drainage all work in harmony, much like nature's symphony, to tenderly guide our nervous system toward balance. Gua Sha, with its serene strokes, not only enhances circulation but also beckons the parasympathetic nervous system, inviting a tranquil state of being. Dry Body Brushing, akin to a gentle reminder, rouses the senses and prompts our nervous system to slow its pace, inviting a moment of peace. Lymphatic Drainage, like a subtle dance, assists the body in releasing toxins, offering a sigh of relief to our nervous system by easing its load. These practices, simple yet profound, mimic nature's embrace, providing an oasis for our nervous system amidst life's bustling rhythm.
Three: Breathing and mindfulness
Breathwork and Mindfulness stand as powerful tools in our hands, offering an empowering way to nurture our nervous system amidst life's storms. Through intentional breathwork, we wield the ability to influence our nervous system's rhythm, orchestrating a calming symphony within ourselves. Mindfulness, a skill to be honed, empowers us to embrace the present, to decode the language of our body, and to carve out a sanctuary of serenity. These practices, seemingly simple yet profoundly impactful, hold the key to our own nervous system's balance, empowering us to navigate life's ebbs and flows with a steady, resilient spirit.
Four: Nurture Ritual
Both internal and external pressures can compromise your nervous system at this time of year. Are you basking in the hot sun in the southern hemisphere, or battling the cold in the north? Perhaps you’re struggling with heightened social situations or long work hours? The hero of our Nurture Ritual, Finger Lime, is here to help. When our nervous system is compromised due to internal or external stress, our body can signal immune cells and certain chemical messengers to direct inflammation to the skin.  When our skin barrier is damaged/weak it struggles to retain moisture, making it more susceptible to external aggressors such as the climate, weather and UV rays. Our Finger Lime serum is rich in active phyto-nutrients that nurture your skin on a cellular level to help repair and strengthen your skin barrier to lock in moisture and keep toxins out. This can help with inflammation, dryness, burns and reactive skin conditions.
