Frequently Asked Questions
A Hydrosol is the water-based active extract obtained through steam distillation of botanical materials. Hydrosols are collected during the distillation process, is alchemical in nature, involving separation and transformation. Essentially, hydrosols consist of condensed water vapor along with the essential oils extracted from plant material like leaves, flowers, or fruits. During distillation, steam passes through the plant material, carrying volatile aromatic compounds and other water-soluble components. As the steam cools and condenses, it separates into two parts: the essential oil, which floats on top of the water, and the hydrosol, which is the water-based portion containing the plant’s active water-soluble constituents and a gentle, diluted version of the plant’s fragrance. Hydrosols are produced as byproducts during the essential oil distillation process, and utilise parts of the plant that would otherwise be discarded, reducing waste and environmental impact.
